Measles is a regular childhood disease which most children experience. Measles is a very contagious disease and is passed on through contact with an infected person. Measles is called by the Paramyxovirus.

Measles is considered to be one of the most dangerous and even unpleasant of childhood disease because of the various complications that it can cause.  Although the basic symptoms are the appearance of spots, it is the various other symptoms which can cause complications and prove dangerous to the health of the child.  Usually the child begins exhibiting symptoms of the disease about ten to twelve days after they have been exposed to it.

During this period the child does not have any of the symptoms and the incubation period may often fooled parents into believing that their child has not been affected.

When a child first exhibits the signs of measles, they are often misread since they are very much like the symptoms of a cold. The child complains of a dry cough which refuses to go away, fever, a runny nose, a pain in the throat and a reddening of the eyes. In addition to this the child may complain of exhaustion, with a specific complaint about pain in the joints.  The parent may rightly assume that the child is suffering from a common cold and fever. However, about two days after these symptoms have manifested, the rash appears. This typically appears first on the face, in and around the ears. Over the next few days this rash moves to the rest of the body and soon even the legs and feet are covered. In the initial stages the spots are small and red in color. These spots don’t cause itching and once the child is on the road to recovery, these fall off, leaving brown spots on the skin. The child usually suffers from fever along with the appearance of the spots.

There are some other symptoms which only a few children complain of. An ear infection is something that some children suffer from when they have measles. Vomiting and diarrhea are other symptoms which some children complain of. Pneumonia is another possible symptom of measles.  In some cases children suffer from Encephalitis. This is the swelling of the brain due to the occurrence of measles. This usually occurs after the child has been thought a period of measles. Some children also suffer from laryngitis and also experience bronchitis problems.
