Dark circles around the eyes are a common complaint and 9 out of 10 people suffer from this problem. The main causes of dark circles around the eyes are extreme exhaustion and lack of sleep, excessive stress, depression and nutrient deficiency. It can also be caused due to hyper pigmentation, prolonged exposure to the sun and excessive consumption of certain drugs and medications.

With advancing age, the skin becomes thinner, causing the fine veins below the surface of the skin to become more prominent and this is another reason for the dark circles. There are luckily several home remedies that can help to reduce the dark circles.

You can apply a paste prepared with 1 tsp tomato juice, ½ tsp lemon juice, a pinch each of turmeric and gram flour around the eyes and wash it off after 10 minutes.

Daily application of this paste is beneficial in reducing the dark circles. You can also wipe the area around your eyes using a cotton ball soaked in potato juice or cucumber juice. This will help to soothe the exhaustion in the eyes and reduce the dark circles. To relax the eyes you can also simply place slices of cucumber or potato on your closed eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. Another good way to soothe exhausted eyes is by gently wiping them with a cold towel that has been soaked in rose water. You should do this daily after returning home. Placing cold, used tea bags on the closed eyes is a good way to soothe and treat dark circles. You can also apply some crushed mint leaves around the eyes or wipe the area using a cotton ball dipped in freshly squeezed mint juice. Almond oil is excellent for dark circles, so you can gently massage the area around your eyes with almond oil. Alternately you can make a paste of crushed almonds and some raw milk and apply this around your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. This will not only reduce the dark circles but also delay the appearance of the fine lines around the eyes. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are beneficial for treating dark circles, so you should look for moisturizing creams or under eye creams enriched with these vitamins. You should also increase your intake of Vitamin C and iron in your diet by consuming more red, yellow and orange peppers and skinless chicken. In addition to all these measures, don’t forget to drink the recommended amount of water, avoid undue stress and exhaustion and get the requisite number of hours of sleep daily.
