It is important to maintain the right body weight, not just from the point of view of appearance but also because of reasons connected to health. People with weight problems are more susceptible to many medical conditions such as heart disease, cholesterol problems, hypertension, diabetes, gall bladder disease etc. It thus it is a good idea to control one’s weight and stay healthy.
The ideal weight is calculated using the body mass index or BMI. In order to calculate your BMI you should multiply your height in meters by itself and then divide your weight in kilograms by this number. The normal range for BMI is between 19 and 255 and a BMI that exceeds 30 is considered as obesity.
If you are trying to lose, weight you do not necessarily have to go to a specialist. You can lose weight at home, following some simple and sensible techniques.
It is important to remember that permanent and healthy weight loss can not be attained overnight. It is also important to keep in mind that not everybody can have the figure of a supermodel. It is important to be fit and not to have an anorexic appearance. The first thing one has to do in weight loss is to improve one’s diet by reducing the intake the fat which contains 9 calories per gram in contrast to proteins and carbohydrates which contain 4 grams each. Alcohol contains empty calories so you should also cut down on your alcohol consumption. However don’t measure everything in calories since that can become an obsessive habit. What is important is to find a healthy and balanced diet which is rich in the essential nutrients and to stick to that, avoiding junk food, greasy, fried and processed food and alcohol. Focus on the fresh vegetables and fruits and avoid eating red meats. Make sure you cut away the excess fat in meat before you cook it and also drain away the fat drippings after you have cooked the meat. If you enjoy eating eggs, avoid the yolk since it is high on cholesterol. You can also make changes in the way you cook your food, opting for recipes which use less oil and try steaming your vegetables instead of using the traditional methods to cook them. In addition to the diet control, it is important to exercise regularly to increase your metabolism and burn away the calories. You can start by regular walks or jogs and then gradually increase the exercise by including aerobics, light work-outs or some sports. If you are having excessive weight problems, it might be a good idea to join a weight loss group where you can discuss your problems and mutually find motivation to work towards your goal.
