A tooth infection is the result of bacterial infection on the pulp of teeth. Pus starts forming at the site of infection, resulting in bad breath and severe pain. Besides bad breath and persistent pain, the other symptom of tooth infection are swelling, inflammation, extreme sensitivity to hot and cold food, pain and general discomfort in chewing.

In severe cases, the pain of tooth infection may also lead to fever. The most common cause of tooth infections is poor oral hygiene. It is usually found that tooth infection happens if brushing of teeth or flossing is not done properly or often enough.

Food particles lodged inside the mouth decays quickly and become breeding ground for bacteria. If they are not brushed away properly, they start attacking the teeth and enter the pulp via cavities. Once the pulp of teeth is infected, it makes the infected region inflamed and extremely painful to touch.

Here are a few home remedies you can try out to get relief. Dissolve half teaspoon of potassium carbonate in a glass of water and rinse your mouth with this solution to reduce the inflammation and pain. Applying clove oil on the affected area can also give relief from pain. If clove oil is not available, you can also crush a clove and apply the powder on the affected area. Grapefruit seed extract is another effective tooth pain reliever. You can also apply crushed garlic cloves on your teeth. To relive pain, you can also try out cold compress with an ice pack. Press ice pack over the area of pain and keep it until the pain starts to subside. A pinch of oregano can also help give relief to aching tooth. However, please keep in mind that home remedies cannot completely treat the infection. At best, they may relieve the pain and suppress the symptoms. But, if the infection is deep, you should consult a dentist and seek proper medical advice. It is important to treat any tooth infection immediately because, left alone, this may turn out to be quite complicated in later stages. Therefore, try the home remedies, of course, but if it doesn't show much improvement, getting treated by a dentist would be the best thing to do. Also, it is important to understand that prevention is always better that treatment. So, it is always better to take preventive measures to protect your teeth in the first place. Always, brush your teeth properly twice a day after eating and floss regularly.
