There are many possible causes of itching, and if this has been going on for a while, your husband should visit a doctor for a check up and diagnosis. This is particularly important if the itching is accompanied by any kind of rash or inflammation. Your husband could be suffering from some kind of skin infection from a fungus or bacteria, in which case he needs to get the appropriate treatment.

Another possibility is that he is suffering from some kind of allergy. This would most probably be something in the environment, but could also be something in his food. If this is the case, both of you will need to pay attention to when the itching occurs and what seems to be causing it.

If this does not help you identify the allergen, then you will need to consult an allergy specialist. The specialist will perform some tests that will conclusively determine what your husband is allergic to.

Your husband could also be suffering from one of several skin conditions that result in itching. Eczema is one strong possibility; due to the extreme dryness that is a symptom of eczema, the skin also itches. There is not much that can be done to tackle eczema - the condition cannot be cured, however it can certainly be managed. It is important to get a doctor's opinion though, so that you have confirmation that you are moving in the right direction.

In case of eczema or even just a severe dry skin problem, which is quite likely here, the main approach in managing the condition is to prevent or at least minimize dryness. Two things that will help to some extent are drinking plenty of water and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. However, the most effective way to battle dry skin is to moisturize daily. For a severe dry skin problem, it is better to use a thick cream rather than a moisturizing lotion. In some cases, it might even be necessary to use substances such as petroleum jelly, aqueous cream, or oil (coconut oil, olive oil, or baby oil), even though these tend to be messy and are not usually preferred for use on the entire body. Your husband should apply the moisturizer soon after bathing, so as to help the skin trap the moisture that it has already absorbed during the bath. Apart from this, your husband should avoid using unnecessary products on the skin, such as deodorants or powders, and may also need to avoid using certain materials such as wool or synthetic fibers.
