Mouth sores are caused by lack of oral and dental hygiene, an imbalanced diet deficient in Vitamins B12 and C and iron, allergies to certain food products, hormonal disorders, bowel disorder, viral infections and skin conditions. The habit of biting on one's cheek and even leading an excessively stressful lifestyle can lead to mouth sores. Mouth sores typically occur on the tongue, gums, inner lining of the cheeks and the lips and they white or yellowish in color with a red circle around them.
They can come singly or even in clusters and can take from 7 to 10 days. If you have mouth sores you will experience a slight burning sensation and pain in the mouth in the beginning and as the infection grows you will experience other symptoms such as fatigue, constant hunger and irritability.
In order to treat mouth sores at home using simple techniques, you should first improve on your dental hygiene habits.
Ensure that you brush twice a day, take care to floss your teeth regularly, clean the tongue properly and rinse your mouth with a good mouthwash. It is important to correct your diet so that it includes foods rich in iron, Vitamin B12 and C and drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your system clean and avoid bowel disorders. In addition to this, you should gargle with a glass each of chilled water and hot water, alternating between the two. This will soothe the burning and also treat any infection. Gargling 3 to 4 times a day with the milk of a freshly grated coconut is also beneficial in treating mouth sores. Tomato juice helps to treat the infection and prevents spread of the sores. All you need to do is gargle 3 to 4 times a day using freshly squeezed tomato juice. 1 cup of Fenugreek seeds can be mixed with 2 cups of boiling water, strained and used to gargle while it is still warm. Alternately you can boil 1 cup of water with 1 tsp of coriander seeds and gargle while it is still warm. Basil leaves are very good for treating mouth sores so you can chew on freshly plucked basil leaves several times a day or boil a few basil leaves in 1 glass of water and gargle using this water. To soothe the burning sensation and make the sores heal faster you can apply a pinch of turmeric powder and glycerin on the sores.
