Pimples are an extremely common problem, and are notoriously hard to treat, especially during the teen years, when they are particularly persistent. You have not mentioned your age, but if you are in your teens, then you need to be prepared for a long battle with pimples. It is certainly possible to get rid of them, but it often takes a long time, in some cases up to a year.

Pimples are basically caused by blockages of the pores on the skin. Contrary to popular belief, this is not due to dirt, but dead skin cells. Normally, dead skin cells are discarded naturally, but for unknown reasons, they sometimes build up on the surface of the skin and end up blocking pores.

When the pores are blocked, the sebaceous glands under the skin continue to produce sebum. The problem arises as the sebum has no outlet. The sebum builds up under the pore, and eventually a pimple forms. Usually, bacteria present on the skin's surface also start feeding on the dead skin and sebum, and as a result of this infection, the skin may also become red and inflamed.

Once a pimple appears, there is not much that you can do to get rid of it, so you should avoid unnecessarily touching it. Do not try to burst, scratch, or squeeze your pimples, as this will only end up spreading the bacteria and causing more pimples, and it will also increase the chances of a secondary infection and scarring occurring.

Preventing the formation of pimples, although it takes a long time, is extremely simple. The most effective treatment is a pimple cream that contains either one of these ingredients - salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Both these substances are extremely effective at helping the skin to discard dead cells very effectively as well as preventing the growth of bacteria. These anti pimple creams are easily available - you can ask for them at any drug store, and check out the chemical composition for yourself. As mentioned before, it will probably take several months for the treatment to start working, but you need to apply it regularly and consistently. In addition to this, you should wash your face several times a day and use a mild facial scrub to get rid of dead skin cells. An effective facial scrub can be prepared at home by simply mixing a little honey, rice flour, and turmeric powder.
