Yeast infection is a condition when the body is infected with a fungus of Candida species (commonly Candida albicans). Although it is generally believed that yeast infection is usually a women's disorder, it is not quite true. Yeast infection can happen to anybody, irrespective of gender and age, although women may be more prone to it.
Yeast infection can happen in any part of the body - mouth, underarms, between toes etc. In women, the most common yeast infection is found to be in the vagina. The most common symptoms of yeast infection are itching and burning sensation, accompanied with swelling and reddening of skin. Yeast infection can be cause by various reasons - reduction of body's immunity level, use of certain drugs and contraceptives, menstrual disorder, diabetes, etc.
Some common home remedies can be tried out to treat yeast infections.
Eat yoghurt to get relief from yeast infection. The lactobacillus bacteria present in yoghurt has the capacity to control the yeast infection. You can also apply yoghurt on the yeast infected area directly by swabbing with a cotton ball. Apple cider vinegar and garlic juice are other effective remedy for yeast infections. Apply these solutions on the affected area to get relief from itchiness and infection. Prepare a mixture of olive oil and juice of grapefruit added in water. Drink it regularly to treat yeast infections. You can also try applying tea tree on the infected skin as it is considered a natural antiseptic. Swab the area regularly with cotton balls soaked in tea tree oil.
Care should also be taken to choose a proper diet when you are suffering from yeast infection. A healthy and nutritious diet can help the increase the immunity of the body and thus effectively fight any infection. Include green leafy vegetables and fresh vegetables in your diet along with plenty of water. Avoid spicy and processed foods, and caffeinated drinks.
Some other measures to prevent yeast infection are about following a healthy and hygienic lifestyle. Always use clean and comfortable cotton clothes. If possible, avoid wearing too tight clothes as they do not allow the sweat to dry up effectively, causing dampness and increasing chances of yeast infection. The skin needs some breathing to do to remain healthy and tight clothes may interfere with it. Dry your body thoroughly with a clean towel after bath because damp or wet skin can be a breeding ground for yeasts. Also, do not use deodorants, perfumes, or other cosmetics on the yeast-infected area as it may further aggravate the condition.
