Cracked heels are a result lack of proper care of the feet and extremely dry skin. Though it is a common problem in winters, people can suffer from cracked heels even during summer, especially if they have dry skin and their feet are exposed to a lot of dust. Cracked heels not only look ugly they can also be very painful and make it difficult to walk.
Treating and preventing cracked heels is thus, as important as it is to take good care of one's skin and hair and should be a part of one's grooming regime. Cracked heels are also an indication of deficiency of zinc and omage-3 fatty acids, so you should ensure that your diet includes foods products rich in these essential nutrients. Apart from this, it is important to keep your body well hydrated so that your skin stays soft and naturally moisturized.
You should thus drink adequate quantities of water through out the day.
Apart from this, there are several simple home remedies for treating and preventing painful cracked heels. The first step in the treatment involves proper cleansing of the feet by soaking them for 15 to 20 minutes in a tub of hot water. You can add some foot cleansing soap, salt and a few drops of glycerin to the water. This will not only leave your feet clean and soften the dead skin accumulated on the soles of your feet it will also relax your feet and soothe the ache in them. After this you should scrub off the dead skin by using a pumice stone or a foot scrub and then apply some petroleum jelly or foot cream on your feet before pulling on a pair of cotton socks. Hydrogenated vegetable oil, clarified butter or fresh cream, available in any kitchen are good substitutes for foot cream. You can also add some lemon juice to the cream. This will help to heal the cracked heels. Alternately you can squeeze the juice of one lemon in some warm water and soak your feet in that water every two or three days. A popular home remedy for cracked heels involves a ripe banana. After cleaning your feet properly, you can apply the pulp of a mashed ripe banana on the heels and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, after which you rinse your feet properly. You can do this daily for a fortnight or till you notice a change in your feet.
