Everyone is concerned with the way they look and thus take care of their hair and skin. However many people forget to care for their feet, thus spoiling the entire effect when their un-kept feet with cracked heels are seen. Apart from the point of view of appearance, it is extremely important to care for one's feet since cracked heels can also cause much discomfort and pain.
You can begin by drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water and fresh fruit juices everyday to keep your body well-hydrated and your skin naturally moisturized and soft.
You should also remember to wash your feet every time you return from outside, especially if you wear open sandals and your feet are exposed to a lot of dust. It is important to clean and moisturize your feet properly before you sleep.
You can soak your feet in a tub filled with warm water with some soap and glycerin in it. This will soothe the discomfort in the feet, relaxing them and cleanse your feet by getting rid of the dirt gathered on the soles of your feet, between your toes and in your nails. It will also soften the dead skin accumulated on the soles of your feet, so that you can scrub it away, revealing soft skin below it. If your feet are hurting a lot, you can add a spoonful of salt to the hot water. This will soothe the ache. Once the skin has been softened by soaking, you can scrub away the dead skin using a foot scrubber or pumice stone. You can rub some moisturizing foot cream or petroleum jelly on your heels after this and wear socks. There are several creams available for cracked heels, but you can substitute them with some cream available at home or even some clarified butter. Regular soaking, scrubbing and moisturizing of the feet helps to treat and prevent cracked heels.
Incase of hardened skin on the heels which has cracked and is causing pain, you can melt some paraffin wax and mix it with some coconut oil. Rub this into your cracked heels at bedtime and pull on a pair of cotton socks so that it gets absorbed in to your skin and does not rub off on your bed linen. You should continue this procedure for a minimum of ten to twelve days for best results. Finally try and avoid open sandals if you are prone to cracked heels and ensure that your shoes are the right size and not too tight.
