When fat deposits accumulate in the liver it causes a condition known as steatosis or fatty liver. The liver helps to metabolize the fat in the body and keeps it healthy. But when it is unhealthy or stops functioning properly it can't metabolize the fat and the same gets deposited in the liver, causing a fatty liver.
A fatty liver may also lead to other liver complications like cirrhosis and if left untreated may cause liver failure and death. You do not generally get any symptoms or signs of a fatty liver, you would only know about it when your doctor conducts certain tests. Fatty liver can be caused due to diabetes, obesity and excessive consumption of alcohol that makes the liver unhealthy. If your fatty liver is due to diabetes then you need to keep your sugar in check and stick to a healthy diet. If it is due to being overweight then you need to take care of what you eat and drink. Avoid the consumption of fatty foods and refined processed junk foods. Drink plenty of water to get rid of the toxins and to improve your sluggish system. Exercise regularly to maintain flexibility and improve the blood circulation in your body.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and sticking to a healthy routine will help you get rid of excess weight and will get your liver in good health again. In case your fatty liver is due to excessive consumption of alcohol then you would need to stop your alcohol intake immediately. Eat a healthy balanced diet and have lots of water and fresh fruits and vegetable juices. This will help to clean your liver and restore its health back again. Artichoke, milk thistle, liquorice and dandelion are considered to be great to detox and cleanse the liver and they also help to rebuild it and make it healthy again. Use liquorice with caution as too much of it may cause blood pressure problems. The chemicals found in artichokes make the walls of the liver strong and increase the production of bile. Eating artichokes will help to break down the fat in the liver. The herb phyllanthus is also very useful in treating liver problems. This herb effectively treats the fatty liver and rejuvenates it to restore its normal functions. Adding the herb rosemary to your daily food also helps in treating fatty liver. The active chemicals rosemarinic acid and caffeic acid found in it stimulate the liver and are very beneficial to treat fatty liver.
