Natural Remedies For Acne

Do garlic really cure acne?
( 5 Mar 2009)

Garlic by itself will certainly not cure acne. If it was as simple as that, then there would not be so many people in the world suffering from acne for years on end. The development of acne is complex and still not fully understood, and treatment of the problem requires a number of different measures.

Home remedies can help to some extent, but simply apply garlic to your pimples is not an adequate remedy for acne.

Acne is often related to oily skin and fluctuating hormone levels in the body. It often affects teenagers, as this is the time when hormone levels fluctuate greatly, and in many cases it refuses to respond to treatment. Many people suffer from acne all through their teen years, and find relief only when they reach their twenties. If you are a teenager with severe acne, you may therefore need consult your family doctor or a skin specialist, and start undergoing proper medical treatment.

To begin with however, you can try some basic measures and home remedies. First of all, it is important not to touch your face too much, especially to pluck, squeeze, scratch, or otherwise interfere with the pimples. This will spread the infection and cause more pimples, and can also end up causing a secondary infection. In addition, such actions increase the chances of your pimples leaving scars, which will be one more thing for you to deal with even after the pimples have gone. Instead, simply wash your face regularly, but gently. Use a mild soap, but only a few times a day – the rest of the time, just wash your face with plain water. You can also use a home made face mask by mixing one egg white, a little honey, and a little turmeric powder into a paste, applying this to your face, and washing it off after half an hour.

Finally, you should use an over the counter cream or ointment that is meant for pimples, specifically one that contains either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These two ingredients are very effective against pimples, and either one of them should be present in the treatment that you are using. The cream or ointment should be applied twice or day or as per the instructions on the package. You should note that it will take several months for the effects to show. Continue your treatment regularly, and do not give up in a hurry.
