There are many different types of arthritis, and the treatment and home remedies for each type vary to some extent. Arthritis can be any of a number of conditions that involve deterioration and inflammation of the joints of the body. Commonly the joints of the hands and fingers are affected by arthritis, but the ankles, knees, elbows, and other joints of the body can also be affected.
Rheumatoid arthritis is among the most common types of arthritis, and is essentially a disorder of the immune system in which the body’s white blood cells act abnormally and can cause inflammation, even damaging the cartilage and tissue of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis first affects the hands and feet, and then gradually starts affecting other joints as well. Osteoarthritis is another common type of arthritis and is the result of many factors, but essentially involves wear and tear of the cartilage in joints.
It typically affects the hands, knees, hips, and back.
These types of arthritis sometimes cannot be managed without proper medical assistance. There are a number of medications that reduce the inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis, and home remedies and diet are only a small part of the treatment, with only minimal impact. With osteoarthritis on the other hand, there is no real treatment, but for severe cases physical therapy may be needed. With gout, another type of arthritis that involves the formation of urate crystals in the joints (particularly the toes and ankles), the most effective treatment is diet control in order to reduce the amount of uric acid in the body. Medications are available to reduce pain and inflammation, but these are used only in very severe cases, and as a temporary measure.
In general, for most kinds of arthritis, the most effective home remedy is a simple warm and cold compress. If you find that one of these works better, you can stick to using it regularly. Else, a good method is to alternate between a hot compress and a cold compress over the course of the day. A cold compress may of course not work for everyone, as in older people it may cause discomfort or numbness very quickly. Apart from this, both rest and exercise are essential. It is important to avoid putting an excessive amount of strain on your affected joints, but at the same time, regular exercise helps strengthen the muscles. This indirectly reduces the amount of strain on your joints.
