This depends on how high your blood pressure goes. Hopefully, you are already consulting a doctor and undergoing treatment for high blood pressure. This does not necessarily mean that you are on medication - it only means that your condition is being monitored by a doctor, who is advising you on how to handle your blood pressure.
Almost all doctors will begin treating blood pressure by first advising the patient to make certain lifestyle changes. These include daily exercise, weight loss, stress reduction, and diet modification. In fact diet control and weight loss are the first areas that any doctor will look at when treating a case of high blood pressure.
It is only in severe case of high blood pressure that drugs are needed. Also, if for some reason there is a sudden spike in your blood pressure, then the only thing to do is to take the medication that has been prescribed by your doctor. There is no home remedy or food that can quickly bring your blood pressure under control, and you will therefore need to rely on medication in such a situation.
In general however, in order to manage your blood pressure, you should first think about whether you need to lose weight. If you are overweight, slimming down will be the most effective way to bring your blood pressure back to normal. This can be done by incorporating some amount of exercise into your daily routine (even a half hour daily walk is enough, at least to begin with) and controlling your diet. In fact, your diet directly affects your blood pressure, besides affecting your weight. You should of course decrease your salt intake - this can be done gradually, as long as your pressure is not too high. Salt in the food is mostly a matter of habit, and you will gradually get used to having less salt in your food. In addition, you should follow the special diet to control blood pressure, known as DASH - Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Besides reducing salt intake, the diet involves a reduction in consumption of red meat, junk food, and sugar. Healthy foods that help control blood pressure include fish, white meat, whole grain, nuts, and of course fruits and vegetables. Whenever a low fat variant of any food is available, this is the option you should go for.
Apart from this, you should get recommendations from your doctor, which will be more suitable to your specific condition.
