Home Remedies for Dark Blood and Clumps

Please advice a remedy for dark blood and clumps when on my period.
(26 Dec 2008)

Dark blood and clumps are a cause for concern if they are excessive and the color and consistency keeps varying throughout your period. If its not the case then you do not have to worry. During a menstrual cycle your uterus lining thickens to get ready for pregnancy and at the time of your period your body sheds this lining along with some blood.

Though it seems like you are losing a lot of blood it is only between 5 to 12 teaspoons. You body releases natural anticoagulants that help to avoid clotting while the blood is expelled out. But during heavy flow there is not much time for it to mix properly hence it results in a little clotting. The dark or blackish clots towards the end of your period are the result of old blood that was not expelled earlier. The clots maybe bright red or dark and blackish in color and are shed mostly on the heaviest days of your periods.

However if you have excessive clotting and or bleeding throughout your periods you might need to see your doctor. Neglecting this could also lead to anemia and general weakness. In the meanwhile, you can try some of the following home remedies:

You can try using sage as it helps to prevent clotting of blood.

Eat papaya to promote proper flow of blood and reduce clotting. It helps in proper functioning of the muscles.

Take about 1 to 2 teaspoons of sesame seeds and boil them in a glass of water. Drink this mix twice in a day. This helps to relieve pain and also helps in proper flow of blood.

Drinking a coriander mix can control excess bleeding. Take about 20 coriander seeds in a glass of water and boil until it is reduced to half and add a little bit of sugar to it. Let stand for some time then drink to get fast relief from pain and control bleeding.

Lemongrass is also known to be helpful in treating the clots, improper blood flow and dark blood. Drink lemongrass tea twice a day.

Use a hot water bottle or a heating pad on your lower back and stomach. This will ensure proper blood flow and will prevent clotting. Drink warm milk or chicken soup. You could also have warm water through the day to prevent clotting and ease blood flow.

Drink juices of parsley, cucumber, beetroot and carrot regularly.

Practice yoga as it helps in relieving pain and also helps in proper blood flow. Thus it prevents clotting and dark blood.
