The only thing that really seems to be wrong with your hair is that you have dandruff. This is a problem that is usually quite easily solved. Dandruff is basically excessive shedding of dead skin from the scalp.
Some amount of shedding of dead skin cells is entirely normal and is barely even noticeable, but with dandruff, the flaking becomes excessive and simply running your hand through your hair can let loose a shower of dead skin.
Dandruff can be caused by several different factors. Dry skin on the scalp can start can start to flake severely, but on the other hand and oily scalp can end up with the same problem.
Sometimes dandruff is also caused by a fungal infection of the scalp or by an allergic reaction or irritation from hair products that are used. In a few cases it can simply be due to insufficient washing of the hair, which allows dead cells to build up and then fall off in clumps. Whatever the cause, the first thing you should try to get rid of dandruff is shampooing your hair more often. If you feel it is necessary, you can try shampooing your hair daily. Make sure that you work the shampoo into your scalp well (but do so gently) so as to ensure that you get rid of all the dirt and dead skin cells on your scalp. If you already have dry hair, or if this daily shampooing starts to dry your hair, you should use a mild shampoo that is meant for dry hair.
If there is no improvement after two weeks of daily shampooing, you should switch to an anti dandruff shampoo. These shampoos usually also have anti fungal properties, and will therefore work even if your dandruff is being caused by a fungal infection. If a couple of weeks of using this shampoo does not show results, you should try applying tea tree oil daily. Finally, if nothing works, you should consult your doctor. In rare cases, a stronger, prescription shampoo may be needed to get rid of dandruff.
Solving the dandruff problem will probably also make your hair more shiny and manageable. You should however work with your hair type as it is, instead of trying to straighten it. Many people yearn for thick and wavy hair; get a hair cut that suits your wavy hair type, and start using a conditioner too. The growth rate of hair varies from one person to the next, and as long as you area eating a healthy, balanced diet, there is nothing for you to worry about.
