Diabetes is a condition when the body gets abnormally high level of blood sugar or blood glucose. Sugar and glucose levels in blood are controlled by a chemical called insulin, which is produced in the pancreas of the human body. If the pancreas does not produce adequate insulin, or if the produced insulin cannot be used by the body properly, blood sugar and glucose levels shoot up and thereby cause diabetic condition in the body.

Diabetes, if not treated in time, may lead to several complications in the body and can also prove fatal. It is, therefore, necessary to seek proper medical advice from a doctor to keep diabetes in check. Diabetes is treatable if monitored regularly, but there is no complete cure available.
Here are some home remedies that can help deal with diabetes. Make a juice of bitter gourd and drink a teaspoon of it every morning to keep blood sugar level in check. A juice of Indian gooseberry) is also helpful in controlling diabetes. Similarly, regular intake of grape fruit juice also helps control diabetes. Aloe vera gel, if taken regularly, can also suppress blood sugar level. Fenugreek seeds are another easily available remedy for diabetes. Soak fenugreek seeds overnight in a glass of water and in the morning drink up the water (eat the seeds as well) on an empty stomach. You can also make a concoction by boiling cinnamon in water and drink the mixture after cooling to room temperature. Onion and garlic are also known to have significant blood sugar lowering action, so include them in your daily diet.
Diabetes can be prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle. It is advisable to exercise regularly and remain physically active. Physical exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent diabetes. If a proper exercise routine is not possible, set aside some time to walk every day. Eat healthy food - cut down on fatty or processed foods and increase intake of fibrous foods (vegetables and fruits). Eat smaller portions; if required, eat multiple small meals in a day. Drink plenty of water and cut down on alcohol, soft drinks, and sugary desserts.
