Teeth usually get stained when the surface (enamel) cracks absorbs color from what we eat and drink. Ageing also causes your teeth to become yellow as the outer layer of your teeth called the enamel erodes and starts thinning as you age. It also happens due to poor oral hygiene that causes plaque and tartar build up on our teeth leading to the yellowish brown appearance.
The simplest way to avoid stained teeth is to stay away from food and drinks that have strong artificial colors.
Avoid having strong tea, coffee, and colas, red wine, grape juice, strong acidic foods with dark artificial coloring, smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, etc. as all these erode the enamel make your teeth weak and stain them.
Proper oral hygiene is of utmost importance for shiny white and healthy teeth.
Brush your teeth with a toothbrush that has soft bristles. Follow a proper and correct brushing technique. You could also use an electric toothbrush with soft bristles.
You can try the following to whiten your teeth:
Brush and floss your teeth after every meal. If you can't do this then at least rinse your mouth thoroughly. Brush your teeth at least twice daily, once in the morning and once before going to bed at night. Regular flossing will help to clear the plaque between the teeth and avoid staining. This simple daily routine will keep your teeth clean and prevent plaque and tartar buildup. It will also help to prevent cavities.
Besides using toothpaste you could also use baking soda once or twice a week to brush your teeth. This will whiten your teeth.
Have an apple after your meal to prevent them from becoming yellow.
Brush your teeth with strawberries as they have a natural ingredient that polishes teeth, clears the stains and makes them white. Mash a strawberry, put it on your toothbrush and gently brush your teeth with it. Or you could also rub a piece of strawberry directly on your teeth and then brush with a toothbrush. But please remember to rinse your mouth thoroughly after you do this or you would get cavities.
Avoid using over the counter whitening products without the consent of your dentist, as they will only give you temporary whitening and will damage the enamel causing harm in the long run.
Go to your dentist for a regular dental check up and cleaning. Your dentist will clean and whiten your teeth safely and professionally.
