Halitosis is also the medical name for the common problem of general bad breath. The primary thing with this problem is that it can be caused due to various things. You may have neglected your dental health and maintenance, which could lead to excessive tartar build up. This is a cause of bad breath, in order to cure this, you can start brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing them every alternate day. Although this sounds like an excessively simple thing, it may actually work very well in taking care of your problem. If you are troubled with any kind of chronic gum disease, this can also cause bad breath, get yourself medically examined by a dentist for this and you will be able to take care of the problem better after an accurate diagnosis. Cavities can also cause bad breath, particularly when they become too big and food starts collecting in them. You need to get your cavities filled in regularly if you want to ensure that this is not the cause of your bad breath. Once again, this would also require a regular trip to the dentist.
One of the commonest causes of bad breath, which most people do not even realize is an improperly cleaned tongue. You can clean your tongue by using a tongue cleaner or simple use your finger or your brush to do it after you brush your teeth daily. You can also make it a point to rinse out your mouth after all meals. This will ensure you're your tongue does not remain clogged with food. Excessive plaque collected on the teeth can also cause bad breath. This can be taken care of by rubbing baking soda on your teeth about once a week. Do not do this more frequently since it may actually lead to the slow and gradual wearing off of the enamel of your teeth. Some general precautions you can also take for bad breath are to drink a lot of water. Those who drink an adequate amount of water generally do not suffer from the problem of bad breath. You should also avoid drinking colas, as these can be a major cause of bad breath. They contain too much sugar and this can also be a major cause of bad breath. Chew on fresh mint leaves for good breath. If you are used to chewing gum, make sure you chew on sugar free gum.
