Dark underarms look unsightly and can be an embarrassment especially if you are wearing sleeveless clothes. Dark underarms are often accompanied with itching, excessive sweating and an unpleasant odor caused by perspiration. The main reason for dark underarms is friction caused by wearing clothes, which are tight around the sleeves.
It can also be caused by excessive sweating in the armpit area or due to some skin infection in the armpit or an allergy from a deodorant. Very often, women who shave their underarms instead of getting them waxed face the problem of dark underarms. This is because the hair doesn't get removed from the roots and thus there is a dark shadow under the surface of the skin and there is also a problem of in-growth of hair.
Build-up of dead skin in the armpits can also lead to dark underarms.
If you have dark underarms, you should make sure you wash them twice daily and keep them clean and dry. Avoid using deodorants directly on the armpit. Dust some anti-fungal powder or alum powder on your underarms to keep them dry. If you rub some baking powder on your underarms just after your shower, then it will reduce the perspiration which causes dark underarms. It is also recommended to rub some coconut oil on your armpits to lighten the dark underarms. Vitamin E oil is also beneficial for making unsightly dark underarms fair. You should also avoid wearing synthetic clothes, especially in summer. It is recommended to opt for loose, cotton clothes that do not rub against your underarms and allow your skin to breathe. If you underarms are visibly dark, you can rub some lemon slices on them, since lemon acts as natural bleach. You can also apply a paste prepared with 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp cucumber juice and a pinch of turmeric powder. This should help to lighten the armpits over a period of time. Another good paste for lightening the underarms can be prepared with 1 tsp gram flour, a pinch of turmeric powder, 1 tbsp curd and 1 tsp milk. Similarly sandalwood paste made with sandalwood powder and rose water is also very effective. You can apply the paste on your underarms and rinse it off with cold water once it dries. In addition to these simple steps, you should also get your arms waxed regularly to get rid of any dead skin as well as any in-grown hair.
