How to cure pimples?
(16 Dec 2008)

Acne is one of the most common skin ailments that affect most people at some point of time or the other. Although it does not pose to be a serious health hazard in any way, severe acne could have a serious psychological impact on a person, simply because it makes one feel self conscious and depressed. This condition is brought about due to hormonal actions, which leads to an increase in the amount of sebum or oil being produced by the oil glands.

The excess oil then tends to build up within the pores, attracting dirt and dust particles, which over time leads to an acne breakout. This condition generally occurs on the face, hands, neck, back and chest; primarily on parts of the body where the sebaceous or oil secreting glands are present.

Although acne, being a chronic skin condition cannot be totally cured, the breakouts can be prevented by following a few simple home remedies. Mix together half a teaspoon of cinnamon power and one teaspoon of honey, so as to make a thick paste. Apply a thin layer of this thick liquid on your face at bedtime. Wash the application off the next morning with cold water. Aloe vera is considered to be a boon for all kind of skin ailments, acne included. Slice an aloe vera leaf into half and scoop out the gel. Now apply a liberal quantity of this gel on the affected area and let it air dry for about 15-20 minutes, after which rinse it off with chilled water. This remedy, if performed twice a day regularly, will yield positive results. Blend one medium sized ripened tomato into a thick paste and apply it onto the concerned area. Wash the application off with lukewarm water, after leaving it on for about thirty minutes.

A paste made by blending a few mint leaves also serves as an excellent remedy for this condition. Apply the paste at bedtime and rinse it off the next morning. When faced with an acne problem, it is essential to drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will help in keeping both your body as well as your skin healthy and hydrated. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water, if not more, is what is generally recommended. Consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables will also prove to be beneficial. These are rich in vitamins and nutrients, which again will help in eliminating this problem. Avoid oily, fried, greasy and junk food.

Pimples are basically blocked pores on the skin as a result of these blockages, the sebum (an oily protective substance that is produced by the sebaceous glands under the skin) builds up and forms pimples. Very often, along with the build up of sebum, bacteria also accumulate on the skin and take hold, causing some amount of inflammation. If you have a chronic pimple problem, you may be suffering from acne. The causes of acne are not entirely clear, but they include factors such as genetics, hormone fluctuations, stress, and certain medications and other chemicals. Acne is most common during the teen years, but can occur at any time in life. Usually however, it begins during adolescence and disappears by the time the person reaches their mid twenties. Acne is rather difficult to control and cure, but today there are some over the counter medications that are actually quite effective. There are still a number of products that make claims that they are unable to match, so do not buy just about any pimple cream. A cream that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide is what you should be looking for. These chemicals help the skin to slough off more efficiently, thus avoiding a build up of dead cells and bacteria.

In addition, hygiene is extremely important in managing acne. Although the idea that acne is caused by dirt is a misconception, a lack of hygiene means that dead skin cells and sebum are able to accumulate on the skin and cause blockages. In addition, bacteria accumulate on the skin, and are then able to infect pimples that develop. You should therefore wash your face frequently, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors or in dusty or polluted environments. Avoid using soap as it tends to dry out the skin this may seem like a good idea if your skin is oily, but in reality drying out your skin frequently will most probably cause it to produce more oil, leading to more pimples.

Modern scientific research is also uncovering clues that point to dietary causes of acne. As yet not enough research has been done, but there is strong evidence that foods such as processed foods (colas, chocolates, sweets, pastries) contribute to acne via a complex mechanism that influences hormone levels. A lack of vitamin A and vitamin E could also contribute to acne, and can be avoided by eating foods such as carrots, spinach, pumpkin, nuts, and olives.
