For most part, quitting smoking is a combination of both physical as well as mental strength. Quite simply, you could call your particular problem a case of mind over matter. Most people are faced with withdrawal symptoms that can be physical manifestations.
There can be stomach cramps that calm down only after you smoke a cigarette. Another common one is also that the entire body starts shaking. You may also experience cold shivers and sweats. This is quite normal for people who have been smoking quite heavily for long periods of time. Heavy smoking would be considered to be about a pack of 20 cigarettes or more in one day. If you smoke more than that even, then sometimes it is also normal to experience hallucinations. From your description, it seems that you have not been such a heavy smoker and have not reached that state of affairs yet. Physiologically, it would be easier for you to leave off the habit than people who would have gone that far. From your description, it sounds as though your case of inability to quit smoking is more due to a mental roadblock than anything else. It is good to know that this is quite common too.
In order to quit smoking you need to be mentally strong. But apart from that, you would also need to break certain habit forming patterns of behavior. You could try playing the association game. This would mean that every time you feel the urge to smoke, you can replace it with something else. You could try going for a jog each time you feel the desire to smoke. This will help to improve the condition of your lungs, since you will end up jogging quite a few times! But this will also slowly start making the association in your mind between jogging and smoking. Remember whatever activity you choose to replace smoking with must be tough. Only the toughness of the task will be able to make the association. You must also be determined enough to quit so that the tough task you choose must be carried out. Otherwise, you will find it easier to continue smoking and ignore everything else. You could also join a competitive sport to quit. This way, you will be forced to perform to high standards and will have to work towards improving upon your stamina. Quitting smoking is the first step towards improving upon your stamina, because smoking begins and ends with affecting your lungs adversely.
