They cause extreme indigestion which in turn causes heartburn. You must also increase your intake of fresh and unprocessed foods, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables. This will also help to neutralize the acid production in your body. Focus more on apples, papayas, bananas and strawberries. These will make the maximum difference in neutralizing acid content in your body.
You should also increase your intake of yogurt, which is always helpful in dealing with acidity. It will neutralize as well as reduce acidity. Increase your water intake significantly. Make your own mint flavored yogurt for better results. Crush a few fresh mint leaves and add these to fresh and unflavored yogurt. You can season this with either sugar or rock salt for best results. Mint leaves help to cool down your innards and reduce acidity. You can also mash an over ripe banana and add a bit of fresh milk cream to it. This can be eaten on an empty stomach first thing in the morning for best results. You must drink at least 10 to 15 large glasses of water everyday in order to control your acidity.
