Kindly suggest some steps to cure wheezing?
(19 Nov 2008)

Wheezing, sometimes accompanied by a tight feeling in the chest, dry cough and palpitations are common symptoms of Asthma. Asthma refers to a condition in which a foreign object enters the bronchi and bronchioles causing problems in breathing. Genetic factors are usually responsible for Asthma, but it can also be triggered by dust and pollen in the air, mould in the surrounding environment, and even some food products.

With non-allergic Asthma, on the other hand wheezing and breathing problems can be triggered by cold weather, presence of smoke in the air, certain perfumes, exercise and even certain strong emotional situations which include stress and excitement.

To avoid asthma attacks, you should immediately ensure that your surrounding environment is mould free, by keeping your windows closed and giving special attention to damp and dark areas while cleaning. You should wear a mask that covers your nose when you step out to avoid dust and pollen in the air. It is also important to identify which foods trigger your asthma, but the common culprits to be avoided are: strawberries, some nuts, milk and eggs, shellfish and even some wines! When you get a wheezing attack, remember to breathe slowly. You should practice breathing exercises daily, inhaling slowly, only from the nose, holding your breath for a few minutes before exhaling. Yoga has an excellent breathing exercise, i.e, Pranayama which helps to increase the lung power. Even though certain exercises trigger asthma attacks, you should exercise regularly, taking care to choose the right exercises. Light exercises, aerobics and swimming help to increase resistance to wheezing and palpitations. It will also help you to control your weight, another important factor in increasing wheezing and breathing problems. Finally you should learn to master your mind, relax and avoid extreme emotional reactions such as stressful crying or excited laughter. It is important to learn not to panic and to control your mind and the Asthma!

Apart from this, there are some simple home remedies that can help in treating Asthma naturally. You can take steam inhalation twice or thrice daily to keep your airways clear. Adding a few seeds of carom in the water is beneficial. Consumption of 1 tsp of honey with ½ tsp cinnamon powder is said to be beneficial in curing wheezing. Similarly consumption of 1 tsp of fresh ginger juice with honey is also recommended. You can also boil 1 glass of water with ½ tsp of grated ginger, 1 tsp of cumin seeds and a pinch of nutmeg powder and drink this while it is still hot. Garlic is beneficial for all breathing problems so you should use it generously in your food preparations but you can also chew on 2-3 cloves of garlic every morning.
