Problems of bloating, belching, flatulence and digestion are extremely normal occurrences. An increasing number of people deal with this gastro-intestinal problem these days and it should not be ignored. There is a lot of wrong information and thus misunderstanding of the problem, which is actually caused by intestinal bacteria, overgrowth of yeast in the intestinal tract and consumption of certain foods or medication which lead to the production of excessive gas in the intestinal tract.

Bloating is also experienced by people with a nervous tendency who swallow air frequently, a condition known as Aerophagia. People suffering from irritable bowel syndrome or more serious problems such as intro-abdominal tumors and mega colon also suffer from bloating and digestion problems. The main symptoms of bloating are feeling of tightness and fullness in the stomach, accompanied by pain in the abdominal region and an urge to pass gas.

It is very important not to hold the gas in since that will only increase your discomfort. You should excuse yourself to avoid embarrassment and let the gas pass naturally.

Since the main causes for bloating and digestion problems are consumption of fatty, fried and spicy foods, you should avoid them and stick to a healthy diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grain wheat products and cereals. Certain foods with high fat and cholesterol content cause acidity which in turn leads to bloating, so you should watch your diet and avoid such foods. It is also important to have an active routine and exercise regularly. This ensures that there is no build-up of excessive gas in your system and keeps your system fighting fit. There are several simple exercises and Yoga Asanas that are beneficial in treating bloating problems. An effective and immediate remedy for bloating is drinking a glass of cold milk. However people with lactose intolerance should not opt for this remedy. Instead they can chew on three to four fresh leaves of mint which helps to cool the acids in the stomach and provide immediate relief. Asafoetida is another simple home remedy to combat bloating problems. You can consume a pinch Asafoetida and wash it down with a glass of water for quick relief. Other recommended home remedies for indigestion and bloating problems include chewing celery seeds and drinking teas prepared with chamomile, fennel, ginger or peppermint. Consuming pro-biotic food products and supplements such as pro-biotic yoghurt, easily available in the market also helps to fight digestion and bloating problems. There are activated charcoal pills available in the market, which are excellent to deal with indigestion and bloating. However people on birth control pills or other medication should avoid consuming charcoal pills and it should never be consumed over a long period of time.
