If you are suffering from discoloration of the skin on and around your eye due to any injury, the immediate thing you must do is apply a warm compress to it. This will not allow the blood to pool in the area and will prevent the eye from turning black to a very large extent. However, keep in mind that a warm compress only works within minutes of you having been injured.

Even if half an hour elapses, this method may not be sufficiently useful to prevent discoloration f the eye. In any case, if half an hour has gone by, you should start applying ice to your eye. This will ensure that you at least do not suffer from too much of swelling, which will be another more painful problem.

The second best thing to applying an ice pack to your eye is resting the eye. It requires all the muscles around the eyes to be utilized when you do something as simple as blink! So the best thing you can do for your eye at this point is rest it. If you can, go to sleep for a good eight hours after you have injured yourself. Although it is possible that the pain may not let you sleep too soon, but you must try. It is equally advisable to not use a pain killer. This is because pain killers will tend to make you feel momentarily better, and this will make you confident enough to not rest. Be aware that after the effect of the pain killer wears off, the pain will return manifold.

To take care of the pain, you can apply the fresh juice of a potato or cucumber to the eye and the area around it. This will also help to prevent the discoloration considerably. You can also apply a crushed paste of papaya and pineapple, which are rich in substances that will generally help you to heal better and faster. To reduce swelling around the black eye, you can gently massage it with coconut oil, which is useful in reducing swelling almost anywhere. Another excellent agent for healing torn and bruised areas of the body is witch hazel, which can be effectively used for lightening the darkness of your eye as well. You can actually place a cotton pad soaked in witch hazel on your eyes for good results. The best part is that this natural remedy can be sued repeatedly.
