Acne is caused by the blockage and inflammation of the sebaceous glands located just below the uppermost layer of the skin. Sebum from the sebaceous glands along with dead skin cells form a plug and trap naturally occurring bacteria within the gland itself, causing it to become inflamed and infected. Acne is most common during adolescence and generally disappears completely within a few years.
To get rid of acne, you will have to use one or more of the methods listed below.
Benzoyl peroxide is extremely effective in controlling and eliminating mild or moderate acne. Benzoyl peroxide dissolves the blockage as well as kills the bacteria that cause acne.
You can use bactericidal creams or face washes that contain Benzoyl peroxide both to treat as well as prevent breakouts.
A hormonal imbalance often leads to excess sebum production and increased acne breakouts. If you have a genetic predisposition to acne, it would be better to go in for a checkup to identify and treat the imbalance.
A dermatologist will also be able to regulate skin cell shedding (into the pore) and so, prevent acne.
Acne is not caused by a lack of personal hygiene, but it is advisable that you follow a regular skin care regimen that targets acne in order to cure as well as prevent pimples and scars. After a pimple has healed, the skin around it is often left discolored. This hyper-pigmentation is temporary but exposure to direct sunlight will cause it to darken considerably. Avoid using cosmetic scrubs as most of them are harsh and increase inflammation. If you have extremely oily skin, you can use a homemade natural scrub to exfoliate your skin. Lightly mash a few pieces of raw papaya and add a little tomato juice and honey. Raw papaya helps to reduce inflammation while tomato juice is acidic in nature and will help to slough off the upper layer of your skin. Honey is rich in antioxidants, amino acids and minerals that are necessary for blemish-free healthy skin.
There are various treatments available today to treat acne scars. Scars are treated according to their type (based on depth) and severity. Dermabrasion, Laser dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are generally used to treat raised scars. Laser resurfacing is used to stimulate collagen production and so "fill in" deep pitted scars while chemical peels are used to eliminate blemishes and discolorations. You will have to discuss your options with your dermatologist to determine whether your scars will disappear completely.
