Sleep allows the body and brain to relax, providing the much needed break from the stress and tensions of daily life and allowing the body to rejuvenate itself Sleeplessness or lack of sleep, medically referred to as insomnia, is a common problem amongst the urban population, especially those with a more sedentary lifestyle. It is also a common problem with the elderly since sleep decreases with age. Insomnia can lead to a constantly nagging feeling of lethargy, persistent exhaustion and grogginess and can interfere with the general productivity of the mind and body.
Over a longer duration, insomnia can also have an effect on the body's immunity to other health problems. It is thus extremely important to get a good night's sleep and cure any problems related to sleep as soon as possible.
A regular routine and a fixed sleeping schedule are crucial to cure insomnia. You should also try and introduce an active exercise regime into your routine. Working out actively in the daytime and some mild exercises or yoga at bedtime can help you sleep better. Apart from this, it is also suggested to try applying hot packs to the spine to relax the muscles in the back and ease any lingering aches, and to soak your feet in hot water with some salt to ease the tension from the feet after a long day. This usually helps to relax the body and thus it is easier to fall asleep. There are several home remedies to cure insomnia and sleep better. You can drink a glass of warm milk with a spoonful of honey before you sleep. A popular remedy to cure sleeping problems amongst children involves boiling 1 liter of water to which around 50 gms of onion is added. Once cool, you can take a spoonful of this water with a few drops of honey before you go to bed every night. This should ensure a good night's sleep. It has also been suggested that regularly consuming onion pickle with every meal also helps to cure sleeping problems. 1 tablespoon of poppy seed oil is one of the best home remedies for insomnia but it can get addictive and should never be used for children. You can also try alternative therapies such as aromatherapy and music therapy to cure any sleeping problems you might have.
