Head congestion is mainly caused due to a build up of mucous in the sinuses leading to a heavy head. This mucous is sticky and leads to great discomfort. Reasons for head congestion include lack of exercise, lack of sleep, food allergies, lying down for too long, stress or illnesses like a common cold or influenza.
Head congestion is commonly caused, or aggravated, by allowing the hair to remain wet after a shower. Although congestion of the head is not considered to be a condition of importance, neglect of the same can lead to serious complications.
The most tried and tested method of relieving yourself from a case of head congestion involves drinking plenty of fluids to wash out the mucous from the system. Increasing the liquid intake, especially water, makes the mucous thinner and less sticky. Drinking a bowl of hot, spicy soup increases the heat in the body causing a running nose which enables the mucous to drain off leaving less pressure on the head. Alcohol tends to drain the body cells of water and should be avoided in the case of head congestion. Keeping your head elevated while sleeping reduces the build up of mucous. Rest is extremely important as it helps the immune system in being able to use every energy resource in order to get back to better health. Improving the immunity of the body during this period is an excellent idea and definitely helps in quick recovery. Keeping yourself warm, when suffering from a head cold is also advisable as this will help you to get better at a faster pace. Hot showers also build up heat within the body and assist thinning of the mucous. A sauna or steam bath will cause the mucous to thin because of the raised body temperature. A little eucalyptus oil, when rubbed on the chest before a sauna or steam bath, will enhance the speed of recovery.
Applying a mixture of a few drops of cedar, eucalyptus, rosemary in a base of olive oil to your temples and on the nose helps relieve head congestion. Steam inhalation is a well recommended home remedy to assist with relief from head congestion. A few drops of cinnamon oil or eucalyptus oil added to bath water will reduce congestion. Vitamin C helps in fighting colds that will cause head congestion. Orange juice is rich in Vitamin C and will work wonders. Gooseberries also help the body to fight the infection and will help in restoring your health.

For something like head congestion, it is better to visit a doctor, particularly if you have had this condition for more than a week. Do keep in mind that this is a condition that can actually lead to serious problems later on. It is always better to take preventive measures rather than wait for anything drastic to happen. You can always employ some easy measures to take care of this at home as well. The first thing you should do is make sure you do not wet your hair everyday. This will be of maximum help. When left damp, wet hair can actually encourage growth of head congestion, thus making it much worse. Inhaling steam vapors will also help you greatly. It is advisable to take a sauna or a steam when you are suffering from a head cold. If you take a steam bath, then you should make it a point to add eucalyptus oil to the room before beginning. The oil will penetrate your cold piercingly and will help to dissipate your congestion as well. Likewise, if you are going for a sauna, you should do the same. Even if you have hot showers, make it a point to apply a bit of eucalyptus oil to your chest and head before you take a really hot shower. This will help to open your pores and unblock your sinuses really quickly.
The secret to fighting your congestion is to drink plenty of fluids. This will not allow you to become stuffier. If you can, make it a point to drink a glass of hot or warm water every 20 minutes or so; this will make a huge difference and will also alleviate your suffering. It is also extremely important to keep yourself warm when suffering from a head cold. This will help you to cure yourself faster. If possible, stay well covered and rested. Rest is also important because it helps your system to fight back better. It is also a good idea to improve your immunity during this period. Taking large doses of Vitamin C will be of great help. If you can, take a pill, but is equally effective to tank up on orange juice, taken at room temperature. Indian gooseberry is also easily available in stores that sell natural or organic goods. You can take this to help your body fight off your cold faster and better.
