This burning sensation you are referring to is fairly common when you use cloves to get rid of a toothache. This is also a reason why it is preferable to use clove oil. It is relatively less strong than a clove and will hurt less when applied to the aching tooth.

The way to use cloves is to clamp a clove down between the tooth that is hurting and the one below or above it. The juices of the clove will flow directly on to the offending tooth and will help to ease the pain. As far as possible, try not to let the clove actually touch your inner cheek or mouth.

Basically, when the clove comes in contact with skin is the time it starts causing this burning sensation. So the thing to avoid is bringing it in direct contact with your skin. This will work out best of all.

However, there are other remedies you can employ to take care of toothaches. If you keep a chilled, used tea bag on your tooth, you will find that the toothache disappears almost magically. This will work especially well if you are suffering from some sort of infection of mucus deposits inside your tooth. After keeping the tea bag for a while, you will see that the mucus is actually pulled out and deposited on the tea bag. Please do keep in mind that this does not have to happen to everyone. But it is fairly common. If you can, try to use a green tea bag. Green tea is also known for its healing properties and will help to heal your tooth as well. Keeping ice cubes in your mouth can also numb the pain, but this is a relatively temporary measure at best. If your pain is acute or intense, then you can employ this remedy as a stop gap. However, the best thing for you to do in any and all cases is to seek the help of a dentist. This is because if you do not know why your tooth is aching, it is likely that you may never be able to find an appropriate remedy for it. Sometimes, there are certain problems which cannot be taken care of by something as simple as applying clove oil or ice. For instance, if you are suffering from a wisdom tooth emerging wrongly, this will require surgical procedures to get rid of. Simple home remedies will not help you.
