What foods constipate? I've heard that prunes help. Do raisins?

Constipation is a common problem experienced by people all over the world. Constipation is the infrequent and generally painful passing of hard feces. It is generally a mild condition that can easily be remedied, but frequent constipation is a sign of a poor diet and the condition can become more serious than just a cause for discomfort.

If left untreated it can contribute to the development of diverticular diseases, hemorrhoids and also increases the risk of bowel or colon cancer. If you suffer from frequent constipation take it as a warning sign that you need to change your diet and lifestyle.
A diet that is balanced is the best for the proper functioning of your digestive system.

This said, there are certain foods that when consumed in excess or in certain combinations increase the chances of constipation. A sedentary lifestyle coupled with such a diet only accentuates the problem. Generally diets that are low in fiber are believed to increase the risk of constipation. These would include low fiber foods like ice creams, cheese, meat, snacks like pizza and chips, and processed foods like frozen dinners or instant mashed potatoes.
For a healthy diet that minimizes the risk of constipation and promotes healthy bowel movement there are certain points to keep in mind:
  • Minimize or eliminate your intake of processed and refined foods and fast foods as foods that are processed are stripped of almost all nutritional value and fiber. This holds true for fruits and vegetables as well. Instead eat raw fruits and salads. Some fruits that you should include in your diet are bananas, water melon, papaya, pears and apples to name a few. Vegetables like lady finger are also excellent for constipation, but make it a point not to over cook or fry them.
  • Make it a point to moderate your intake of meat as it is low in fiber, and takes a longer amount of time to get broken down and absorbed by your system. For this reason a diet that has a high amount of meat, but is low in fiber and fruits and greens is also likely to increase the risk of constipation.
  • Fluid intake is also vital for the efficient functioning of your bowels, so make sure you drink enough water. Fruit juices will also help a lot as they will not only provide you with fluids but also with much needed fiber and nutrients.
  • Raisins and prunes are both excellent for constipation. You can soak raisins in water for a day and eat them after waking up in the morning, after discarding the stones. Drink the water as well. This is believed to be quite effective even for cases of chronic constipation.
