Backache is one of the most common complaints heard by doctors. It is usually a type of pain that originates in the back muscles, normally the result of excessive strain that an individual may not be used to. Being overweight and bad posture are the most important causes as they exert additional strain on the back muscles. Likewise occupations that involves much lifting, standing or bending tend to cause backache. Mental stress may also be responsible, albeit rarely.

While backache is very common and can be treated by oneself, one must keep in mind that sudden and severe immobilizing backache and pain down the legs are indicative of a slipped disc and may need urgent medical advice. In women a chronic low backache is occasionally due to a disease or displacement of the womb. In fact, in both sexes persistent backache can be a symptom of some internal disorder. If it continues for a week or two you may see a doctor, but the vast majority are not serious and disappear with simple treatment and time.

A hot bath followed by a back massage with liniment is known to very often do the trick. Those with recurrent pain should use a harder-than-usual mattress. You can also consider a fitness regimen of exercise and diet which helps a great deal. The easiest thing that one can do is correct one's posture so as to keep the back upright at times when sitting, walking, standing or working. This prevents excessive strain on the back. While a supporting corset is known to ease pain, it is not advisable to use it regularly as supported muscles weaken overtime.

Lime Juice mixed with coconut oil is known to provide a soothing effect in case of back aches. The affected part must first be washed with warm water and then the mixture should be rubbed on the skin surface. Garden soil without stones, soaked in a little water and heated till tolerably hot and used as a poultice is known to provide relief. Consumption of fenugreek leaves, which may be sweetened by adding sugar or honey, is known to give highly beneficial results. Whatever the method or remedy being used one must be consistent, only then can one expect results. If the problem persists or if there is any side-effect in the form of increased pain or a rash on the skin, one must consult a doctor immediately.
