You will be surprised to know that cholesterol is actually essential for our body. It actually transports fat in your body, provides the defense mechanism in your body and even protects the red blood cells in your body. However the low density lipoprotein is know as the bad cholesterol because it is the main culprit behind the blockages in the arteries.

The high-density lipoprotein, known as the good cholesterol, actually helps in fighting the bad cholesterol and also helps prevent heat attacks.

For someone who has bad cholesterol it is a good idea to avoid food items that contain saturated fats and oils. These are items like butter, coconut oil, lard and other such products.

You can ensure that you when you eat an egg, you avoid eating the egg yolks. Similarly, you should try and avoid coconut. Fruits are all good for your health and citrus fruits are especially beneficial. So you can drink plenty of orange juice. Make it healthy by not adding any sugar to the juice. You can drink a couple of cups of tea or coffee a day as long as you don't add sugar to these beverages. Sugared, aerated drinks are to be avoided. You can eat meat but avoid fatty red meat. Other meats like pork and duck can be consumed only if they have been cooked without too much oil, that is, if they have been baked. Consuming vegetables can help you fight your cholesterol. You should eat vegetables like celery, cauliflower and broccoli. You can also eat fish at least twice a week while other fatty meats like sausages and salami should be avoided. Dairy products like cheese and ice creams should not be consumed on a regular basis. Oat bran is not only a healthy option for breakfast; it can also help in lowering the cholesterol and should be consumed regularly. However, you can have them once a week.
