There are a number of over the counter medications as well as prescription drugs that are used to treat obesity or at least claim to do so. Most of these drugs however, have serious side effects and should be avoided. For people suffering from diabetes, hypertension and similar medical conditions, a doctor may prescribe an anti obesity drug. Drugs like fluoxetine, orlistat, and sibutramine are considered to be among the safest and most effective anti-obesity drugs.
There are three basic types of anti obesity drugs based on their mechanism of action.
  • Appetite suppressants: Epilepsy medications and a number of amphetamine based drugs work in this manner and decrease caloric intake by suppressing your appetite. This contributes to and accelerates weight loss.
  • Metabolic accelerators: Some anti obesity drugs increase the body’s metabolic rate, enabling your body to burn extra calories.
  • Nutrient inhibitors: As a result of extensive research in this field, most modern anti obesity drugs fall under this category. Drugs like Orlistat prevent the body from absorbing fat by obstructing fat breakdown.
Before taking any weight loss drugs it is imperative that you discuss it’s possible side effects with your doctor. Many weight loss drugs have been associated with heart valve damage and fatal pulmonary hypertension. Phenylpropanolamine, a popular anti obesity drug in the past has been recently linked to hemorrhagic stroke. The US Food and Drug Administration strongly recommends caution with non-prescription unresearched products that are marketed on the internet, as their effectiveness and safety remain unsubstantiated. Laxatives and diuretic drugs are often used as a means of weight control; however, they result in potassium deficiency that can cause cardiac or muscular problems.
Pine nut oil has recently come to play an important role in the treatment of obesity. It is a natural alternative to appetite suppressants and other anti obesity drugs and is completely free of any side effects. Its effectiveness is due to pineolenic acid, which is an active ingredient in pine nut oil. This component of pine nut oil causes the release of cholecystokinin and glucagonlike peptide, which are hormones associated with satiety and appetite suppression. Pine nut oil has been used traditionally for centuries by the Chinese and Russians as an effective appetite suppressant, digestive aid and metabolism booster.
Pine nut oil also possesses significant nutritional value and is rich in vitamin E, vitamins B1, B2 and B3, essential amino acids, magnesium, iron, copper, zinc, and iodine, beta-carotene and other carotenoids.
