A hernia is the medical name given to an opening in the musculature of the stomach. The wall of the stomach may have some weak spot or opening, and this would cause a slight bulge in that particular area. This bulge is typically called a hernia.
If left unchecked or untreated, a hernia can grow to abnormally large proportions so much so that it actually becomes an embarrassment. But even more importantly, it can pose to be a real danger to the health and well being of a person as well. It is also important to know that once a hernia has developed, it will keep growing, as simple activities like coughing too hard, straining for a bowel movement, or even lifting anything that weighs more than three pounds can cause more protrusion.
The first sign of a hernia is an abnormal swelling or protrusion which can appear suddenly. It is not necessary for this to be painful at first, but pain can develop as it keeps growing. Typically, hernias are located in the lower abdomen, close to the groin area. The musculature here is pretty much spread out, so a weakness is more likely than in any other place.
Treatment of hernia would depend upon the stage your hernia has reached. Advanced stages can pose to be a serious danger because if by any chance a part of the intestine were to find its way into the crevice, you could be in grave danger. It is better to get treatment early on, so as to avoid unnecessary complications. The most effective cure for a hernia is surgery. This is the only plausible way to stop it from growing any further and checking it at the same time. A surgery would mean that the crevice that has formed will be located and be sealed off, in all probability, permanently.
