Hidradentitis suppurativa is the medical term for a skin disease that infects the areas that house the apricone sweat glands and hair follicles, which are generally situated in the buttocks, groin and the underarms. In women it is also found under the breast areas. The diseases generally appear as groups of chronic abscesses or boils, the size of which can range from as small as a pea or as large as baseballs.
They are very painful and the boils may continue to stay there for years causing occasional bouts of inflammation which ends in the boil bursting and the puss draining. Once the boil drains it forms a wound that does not heal for a long period of time. These bouts of inflammation are often caused by stress, changes in hormone levels and excessive heat or friction from synthetic clothing.
The boils that do stay for a long period of time often forms huge scars and tunnels that connect the abscesses present under the skin. This often led to bacterial infections and often cellulites. Treatment for this disease depends on the severity of the condition. If the attack is mild then the disease can be treated by the help of a warm compress and some anti-bacterial soap. The use of anti- inflammatory drugs can help relieve the symptom of inflammation. If the level of infection is severe then the patient requires the use of topical and oral antibiotics. In extreme cases surgery is necessary and the whole area of the infected skin has to removed and replaced by skin grafting. In order to reduce the chances of flare ups avoid using deodorant that may cause an allergy, avoid wearing synthetic clothing that is tight and stay away from areas that have extreme humidity and heat. Avoid getting over stressed as it is also a cause of flare- ups.
