The only way you can solve this problem is by visiting a doctor. You will need a proper physical examination by a doctor in order to detect the cause of the pain in your hip. Pain in the hip joint can be quite troublesome indeed — as you mention, the pain often makes it difficult to stand for a long period of time or even to walk very much.
There are a few possible and likely conditions that you may have, but it will not be possible to say for sure without a thorough examination, and most probably looking at x rays of your hip region as well.
One common cause of hip pain is trochanteric bursitis, an inflammation of the bursa (a small sac that is filled with fluid and acts as a cushion at a joint) at the top of the thigh bone or femur. Pain is usually felt at the outer, upper portion of the thigh, and sometimes extends a little further down.
In addition to being aggravated by standing or walking for a long time, the pain is sometimes also sharpened by lying down, especially if this puts pressure on the area. Treatment of the problem will depend on the severity of the condition and its cause too. Trochanteric bursitis is sometimes the result of a gait problem, and if this is the case, your gait will need to be improved with therapy. You will of course also need to avoid activities that worsen the pain, but sometimes medication (including steroid injections) is necessary, and in severe cases, surgery may also be necessary. Sciatica can also sometimes involve pain in the hip joint, but this is unlikely to be the only symptom. Since you do not seem to have any other symptoms, sciatica is quite unlikely; however, as mentioned before, only your doctor will be able to tell this for sure.
