Adult acne or blackheads are pretty much the same as acne in teenagers - it is basically due to oil and dead skin cells that have gotten stuck in the skin pores. Once they stick in the pores, they block the sebaceous glands, causing a build up of sebum, the oily, protective substance that is normally released to coat our skin. This combination of sebum and dead skin cells tends to mix with the bacteria that are also normally present on the skin, and as they are exposed to the atmosphere they get oxidized and turn black.
The bacteria also cause an infection, which is why the pimples get inflamed, generally turning red and normally developing a pustule or whitehead. Once these pimples break they tend to scar on the skin and these scars remain there for years. For various reasons, acne mostly affects people during adolescence, but certain factors can cause it to recur later in life.
Although different from teenage acne in some ways, adult acne is mainly caused due to the use of low quality skin and beauty products, stress and anxiety, an imbalance of hormones and sometimes the use of contraceptives.
The imbalanced hormones and the contraceptive may cause the over stimulation of the sebaceous glands and the low quality cosmetics can lead to the accumulation of dirt in the skin pores.
One of the best remedies to use to treat acne is tea tree oil. This oil is normally diluted and then added to the pimple directly. Basically the tea tree oil contains an ingredient known as teripinen-4-oil and is an effective antibacterial agent that can kill the acne causing bacteria. Another remedy that you can use is aloe vera gel in either the cream form or in its natural gel form. In addition, you should wash your face regularly with a mild soap, and use any ointment that contains salicylic acid.
