Cure for Nail Fungus

remedy for nail fungus?
(25 May 2009)

Nail fungus infections are quite a common occurrence mainly because of the ease with which they can spread. A nail fungus infection occurs when one or more of your nails get infected with fungus. The fungal infection generally begins with the appearance of a white or yellowish spot just beneath the tip of the fingernail or toenail.

Discoloration and thickening of the nail is also common as the infection progresses and the fungal growth spreads deeper into the nail. The edges of the nail may also begin to crumble, which can be unsightly and cause some amount of pain.

Fungi thrive in moist and warm environments, which is why nail fungus infections are more likely to develop on nails exposed to such warm and moist conditions. Sweaty shoes and shower floors are common breeding grounds. You may also be at greater risk of infection if you suffer from athlete’s foot as the two often co-exist. It is however noticeably different in that it only affects the nails, while athlete’s foot affects the skin of the feet.

Thankfully nail fungus can be treated quite effectively at home with some simple home remedies.
  • First and foremost you need to ensure the highest levels of personal hygiene to prevent a spread of the infection from one nail to the others. Always make sure that your hands and feet are dried thoroughly.
  • Avoid walking bare foot in public showers, gyms or locker rooms as they are common sources of infection.
  • Never share towels, wash cloths, gloves or socks and shoes and always make sure that these accessories are always kept clean.
  • Tea tree oil has come to be the most highly regarded of all herbal and natural remedies when it comes to fungal infections. It is extremely effective against nail fungus infections. Just soak a cotton swab in the diluted oil and apply it against the infected nail twice a day.
  • Listerine mouthwash is also believed to help fight off fungal infections. Just soak your hands or feet in the mouthwash for around twenty minutes.
  • Apple cider vinegar is another effective remedy. Mix it with water in equal proportions and allow the affected foot or hand to soak in the mixture for around fifteen to twenty minutes.
  • Lemon juice or onion peels are also effective against fungal infections. You can either apply them directly or with cotton swabs.
