In some individuals the chemicals eliminated in urine crystallize to form the beginnings of a kidney stone.

At the time of formation they are very tiny, and may be even smaller than a grain of sand, but they can grow to be even larger than a quarter of an inch. Their size however does not matter as much as their location. When it is located in the kidney it is not very problematic, but if it falls into the ureter it acts as an obstruction disrupting the flow of urine. The condition can be exceedingly painful as urine can not pass through, and the buildup of urine results in tremendous pressure on the kidneys. The pressure also pushes the stone further until it reaches the bladder and the obstruction is relieved.
