Asthma is possibly the most common respiratory disorder. It causes inflammation and blockages of the trachea and bronchial tubes. It therefore causes a narrowing of the airways, which restricts the airflow into the lungs, making breathing very difficult.
Anyone can be afflicted with this condition, but it is more common among children and young adults. Wheezing, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and coughing, are all symptoms of an asthma attack. The severity of the condition may vary from person to person, with some experience very mild symptoms, while in severe cases it may even be a cause of death. Sadly, most deaths from asthma are avoidable if proper medication is made available.
Asthma may be allergic or non allergic. Allergic asthma can be triggered by allergens, most commonly smoke, dust, pollution, pollen, mold, drugs, chemicals, and food additives. Anxiety, fear, stress, exercise and excessively dry or humid weather are the common causes of non allergic asthma.
Asthma being a long term illness, conventional medications and drugs can do little other than temporarily resolve the condition and relieve symptoms. Natural remedies and methods to strengthen the immune system, and the lungs can have a much greater effect in reducing the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. Before you try out any natural remedy however make it a point to consult with and inform your doctor, as there are many remedies, particularly herbal, that can cause reactions if they interact with other drugs that you may be on.
Here are some home remedies and tips for asthma:
- In the case of allergic asthma it is most important that you identify the triggers for an asthma attack and avoid any contact with the allergens.
- Yoga: This ancient discipline has come to be regarded as a potent cure for a variety of ailments, and its effectiveness for asthma patients is undeniable. Yoga practices involve physical movements, breath control and meditation. This therefore not only improves physical health, but also eliminates stress, and strengthens lung capacity. The elimination of stress and strengthening of the lungs are both beneficial for asthma patients.
- In some cases a diet that restricts dairy and sugar products has also been found to be useful.
- Aromatherapy is another remedy that is extremely effective and popular. For asthma you can best do this through steam inhalation and chest rubs. For a steam inhalation, use oils like eucalyptus and lavender. Chest rubs with oils like lavender, marjoram, and geranium are also very effective.
