Sinus infections or sinusitis can be a problematic condition in which the sinus and nasal passages are inflamed. Headaches, and a feeling of pressure on the eyes, nose and cheeks or even on one side of the head are quite common. Bad breath, fever, cough, nasal congestion, and even thick nasal secretions are among other possible symptoms.
Sinus infections are a frequent and lifelong occurrence for many, and conventional treatment is therefore not very popular among those suffering from sinus problems. The conventional treatment generally involves antibiotics which can have mild consequences, added to which their effectiveness decreases if taken too often. For this reason home remedies and natural treatments are a lot more popular when dealing with sinus infections.
Sinus infections usually take hold soon after you are afflicted with a cold or flu. If you are aware of your vulnerability to sinus infections it would be advisable for you to take precautions right away. Increase your intake of fluids as this will help prevent a thickening of mucus, thus ensuring that the sinus cavities are kept clear. In addition to this use a humidifier or vaporizer to ensure that your room is slightly humid.
In case you do come down with a sinus infection however there are still plenty of home remedies for sinus infection that you can turn to:
- Steam inhalation is possibly the most effective natural treatment for sinusitis. To increase the effectiveness of your steam inhalation you can use aromatherapy measures, by adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water. This will help facilitate easier breathing as it opens up the nasal passages.
- Drink warm fluids throughout the day, particularly those rich in proteins, electrolytes, sugar, minerals and vitamins.
- A strong concoction prepared with black pepper, clove, ginger, basil and cinnamon, can serve as an effective remedy for sinusitis. Add them to some water and allow the mixture to boil for at least five or ten minutes, after which you can strain it and allow it to cool. Add some honey to it before drinking.
- A hot compress applied over the inflamed area can help to reduce the swelling.
- A paste made from cinnamon and water, applied to the forehead can also offer relief against sinus infections.
- Mustard seeds can also be used to prepare another effective remedy. Boil them in water to prepare a decoction that you can apply into the nostrils after it cools. This should offer some relief from the symptoms of a sinus infection.
