Colic can be extremely nerve-wrecking for parents as all your baby seems to do is cry! Colic is a condition in an infant where the baby cries incessantly. The reason for this condition is not medically known although it is believed to occur due to pain in the baby’s stomach.

Colic as a condition is quite harmless and occurs in almost all babies during the first few months from birth. However it could cause a substantial amount of stress in first time parents as they would most likely be unaware of this condition.

As the baby is unable to express its needs and discomforts it is very hard to ascertain, what a baby actually wants to communicate when it cries.

However it is of paramount importance to have your baby checked by a child specialist to rule out any serious ailments or sicknesses in case it cries unstoppably. Once the doctor rules out the possibility of any serious sickness, you can treat colic as plainly as possible. As colic does not have a medically approved or universally accepted reason for occurrence, one cannot treat it in a uniformed or accurate pattern. It is believed that colic in infants generally occurs towards late afternoon and last up till evening. Some of the reasons for colic are stomach upsets in babies, irregular or disturbed sleep patterns and early discontinuation of breast feeding. In case of a stomach upset you can administer gripe water to your baby. This will help make him feel better by soothing his aching stomach. Additionally it would do your baby immense good if you keep him upright after feeding him until he burps. This would make sure that the milk consumed has reached his digestive system, as babies tend to keep the last sips of milk in their throat causing them to choke. In case of irregular or disturbed sleep patterns in your baby, you must take care to follow a healthy lifestyle yourself. The baby especially when in the infant stages depends entirely on its mother. A mothers’ eating and sleeping habits directly affect the child. For instance if a mother suffers from a cold, it is immediately passed on to the baby. Therefore you should make sure that you eat and sleep well. Keeping the baby close to you will give it a sense of security and peace, thus causing it to sleep without being disturbed or troubled. One of the other major causes of a colic condition in babies is discontinuation of breast feeding at an early stage. One must try to breast feed the child as much as naturally possible. Your body will stop producing milk once it feels the baby does not require it anymore.

The above remedies are mere suggestions, as colic itself has no definite cause or cure. Therefore in this case the best remedy is to care for your child in a prudent manner and see that its daily needs are fulfilled.
