A sty is a swelling found at the edge or inside of the eyelashes. It is just like a pimple, but a bit bigger in size; it looks more like a boil. A sty is usually a result of bacterial infection of the sebaceous glands on the eyelids.
A sty usually does not stay long and causes no permanent damage, but it may cause quite a lot of suffering while it lasts. The common symptoms include itchiness, swelling, redness, and extreme pain around the eye. Also, being contagious in nature, it can spread quickly from one person to another; so, preventive measures must be taken to curb its proliferation.
A sty infection generally heals itself in a few weeks, but in the meanwhile, care must be taken to manage the symptoms and relieve the pain with some home remedies. Here are some common tips you should follow:
- Maintain proper hygiene: It is very important to keep the infected eye clean. Use cotton balls to wipe away the oozing pus regularly. Also, you will need to wash your hands, fingers, and nails often so that they remain clean and do not spread the infection. Use disinfectants to wash yourself and the clothes you wear.
- Let the sty burst on its own: Do not try to forcibly burst the sty as it may spread the infection and leave permanent scar marks.
- Avoid using cosmetics: Use of cosmetics can further irritate the eye and aggravate the condition.
- Use hot compress: Hot compress is a good way to relieve the pain and also to ripen the sty sooner. The sooner the sty ripens, the quicker the pus and infection drains out naturally. For hot compress, you can soak a towel in hot water, wring out excess water, and then apply the moist cloth upon the infected eye. Keep the moist towel pressed on the eye for about 10-15 minutes, then repeat the same procedure for a few more times.
- Use turmeric powder solution: Boil a spoonful of turmeric powder in two cups of water. Take a fine cloth and strain the solution to remove the coarse particles. Let the solution cool down to room temperature and then apply the solution on your eye.
- Use alum water solution: Dissolve some small granules of alum in a cup of water and use this solution to wash the eye.
- Use teabag: Soak a teabag in warm water for some time. Then take out the teabag and put the moist teabag on your infected eye.

Stye causes the eyelid to get inflamed and a pimple like structure grows on the eyelid. It causes discomfort to the eye from outside and within. It doesn't hamper vision but the discomfort is great. There is no method for the prevention of the sty but natural treatments for sty can be used so that the sty heals faster without harming the natural vision of the eye.
Sty may be caused due to eye infection caused by bacteria or at times even a nose infection may cause a sty. Pus keeps accumulating in the sty and one will be healed only when the pus is out. It may also cause swelling in the eye accompanied by fever and watering of the eye.
Certain home remedies can be used to cure a sty. The eyes should be washed with triphala (herbal powder) water which can be prepared overnight by dissolving triphala powder in water and filtering it. Soaked cilantro seeds solution can also be used to wash the eyes. As a part of herbal treatment for sty alum water too can work wonders.
Potato paste when applied to the eyelid helps the pus come to, which provided great relief and comfort to the individual. Used tea bags too can be placed on the eye lid several times a day to provide coolness and ease to the eyes.
Excessive strain on the eyes should be avoided for few days till the sty has permanently disappeared. Boiling tea in water along with acacia leaves and washing eyes with the filtered water would help in curbing the discomfort to great extent.
