Hyperthyroidism diagnosis, Causes and signs of hyperthyroidism
Hi, I'm a 21 year old male. I am 5 ft, 8inch. Very underweight as I only weigh 120lbs. I have tried protein drinks and an immensely large calorie intake, however, my metabolism still seems to not let me gain any weight. What should I do?

Since you mentioned that you have a relatively high metabolism, I would suggest that you go in for a complete blood test to rule out hyperthyroidism and related conditions. The thyroid hormone is produced by the thyroid glands and increases the metabolic activity of the body's cells. In a person suffering from hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland is overactive thus causing the systems to "speed up" (over stimulation).
If you find that you have a rather ravenous appetite without gaining weight, it is possible that you suffer from this condition. If you find yourself constantly fatigued and suffer from any anxiety symptoms, you should get yourself checked as these are the secondary symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
If you feel that your metabolic rate is high which prevents you from putting on weight, I suggest that you visit a doctor or a nutritionist who will be able to verify and help you to correct this situation.
You also mentioned protein drinks and a diet that consisted of "an immensely large calorie intake". If your diet is lopsided, you will find it much tougher to put on weight. Many people try to put on weight by having foods that are either high in proteins or fats. However the other food groups are essential for the absorption of these calories. If you do not eat foods that are rich in fibre, your body will be unable to completely absorb all the fats or proteins that you have consumed. You can have a larger amount of proteins and fats but make sure that you do not eliminate the other food groups. If you do have a higher metabolism, it would mean that your body would require a higher amount of calories throughout the day. You should calculate and formulate your diet plan taking this into account.
