Uterine fibroids is a very common condition that afflicts women who are of the child bearing age. The chances of most women developing the condition at some point of time are in fact very high. This is not a major problem for most women generally the symptoms are very few and minor.

It can however be extremely painful for some women with disturbing symptoms, like heavy menstrual periods, infertility and abdominal cramping. In such circumstances when the condition is troubling and disruptive the most effective treatment is surgical removal. Medicinal treatments are also available but these generally address only the symptoms.

There are a number of surgical treatments available for uterine fibroids, with the traditional ones the most effective.

Hysterectomy is the most commonly performed surgery for the treatment of this condition. The uterine fibroids are removed through removal of the entire uterus. This is a permanent solution to the problem but it will also mean that child bearing is no longer possible. The surgical procedure could also involve removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix. This method of surgical removal is ideally suited to women suffering from uterine fibroids that has caused extremely enlarged ovaries. This method is usually recommended if the uterus has grown to the size it would be in the twelfth week of pregnancy. It is also advisable if there is any chance of the fibroids being cancerous.

Another commonly used method is myomectomy, in which the uterine fibroids is removed without removing the uterus. Although this method of surgical removal is also very effective and often successful, there can still be a recurrence or regrowth of fibroids.

There are other methods of removal that now exist, some of which are quite effective. But these remain the most commonly practiced methods of surgical removal and the most effective.
