Back pain is very common problem for people, it is more apparent in people who are older and can appear in various areas of the back. This can include the upper, lower or middle areas of the back. The pain can even start from the bones and ligaments that make up the spine and can also be caused in the muscles and tendons that help support the back.

It can also be caused in the nerves ending of the spinal column and the internal organs close to your back. The pain can be a mild annoying one or the pain could be intense and severe. Based on the time duration of the pain you will be able to tell if the pain is just due to strain or whether it has the tendency to become chronic.

Generally the pain caused due to strain arrives suddenly and is very severe but does not last for a very long time. However if the back pain is chronic then the pain generally lasts for a long time and though the pain is not as severe the fact that it keeps recurring adds to the discomfort felt. Therefore the most effective way to deal with your back pain in the long run is to consult your doctor, get a physical examination of the area and also make a description of the symptoms experienced. This will allow the doctor to diagnose the problem effectively and thus be able to treat your back pain properly. This is advised because if it is chronic back pain; then the condition tends to progressively deteriorates over time.

You can also try these preventive measures to avoid back pain in the future. Make sure to exercise regularly, this will help strengthen the muscles in the back and the vertebral column. When sleeping pay attention to the type of surface you will be sleeping on. The surface should not be very hard or too soft, therefore allowing your spine to stretch out properly in a comfortable manner. When lifting things do not pick it up directly from the ground but rather bend on your knees and then pick it up. This will help take off pressure from your spine and reduce the chances of further back aches. Massage the affected area with a hot pack for a small period of time to get relief from the pain. You can also use an over the counter pains killer but it will only provide short term relief.
