Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disorder of the large intestine causing it to get inflamed and ulcerated. This often leads to flare ups causing severe attacks of bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. The risk of long term colon cancer has also been associated with the condition.
The exact cause of ulcerative colitis is not defined and the common symptoms are observed and the diagnosis is carried out by examination of the sigmoid colon. A flexible viewing tube is inserted into the colon (this is known as sigmoidoscopy); If not this method then the large intestine is examined using the same method. The basic objective of the treatment is to try and reduce the amount of inflammation and the restoration of any major loss of fluids and nutrients. The disease actually begins in the rectum or in the sigmoid colon and may or may not spread to the large intestine. However the colitis might end up spreading to the large intestine but usually does not affect the full thickness of the wall.
A patient affected with ulcerative colitis should pay the most attention to the maintenance of a well balanced diet, as it can have a positive effect on the symptoms. Therefore consume foods that are rich in iron as they makeup for the anemia that is caused due to the constant loss of blood through stools. Try and avoid consuming large quantities of fresh fruits and raw vegetables as it can cause injury to the already inflamed lining of the large intestine. Try and observe if dairy products are causing any problems, if so then avoiding dairy products will help reduce your symptoms. If there is no difference then you can continue to consume a moderate amount of dairy products. The consumption of fish oil (which also contains omega3) has also been found to greatly reduce the symptoms of this disorder. The number of omega 3 capsules you will have to take to reduce your symptoms will depend on the severity of your symptoms and the level of colitis that you have. Therefore consult your doctor for a proper examination if you have not, as the doctor will be the best guide in prescribing the dosage.
