Mastitis is a problem that commonly affects the mammary glands. It is prevalent in women, but there have been a handful of cases recorded with men facing the problem as well, thus making sure that men are not exempt from it in any way. There are two types of mastitis, the kind that affects women who are breast feeding and the kind that affects those who are not.

The former is more common, while the latter is rare. The common symptoms of mastitis are dull and strong pain and swelling in the breasts. Sometimes, this is also accompanied with redness.

Although it is an infection of sorts, it is important to know that mastitis in no way a deterrent to feeding your baby. You can safely and successfully continue to feed your baby even despite the condition - as a matter of fact, it is possible that if you continue to breast feed, the trouble will leave sooner.

Some cases of mastitis occur due to the fact that women do not fully empty out the breast while feeding the baby. This leads to increased pain and discomfort. In some cases of mastitis, the onset can be felt with typical flu-like symptoms. You may be confused about what to diagnose in the beginning, but this will soon go away. Within 24 hours, all the symptoms will restrict themselves to one breast and the redness and swelling will become visible as well. It is good to know that generally, mastitis affects a single breast and not both together. Seeking immediate cure for mastitis is extremely important, since if it is neglected or not properly treated, it can lead to an abscess in your breast, which will only complicate things further. Apart from antibiotics, you can also gently massage your breasts with baby oil for relief and improved circulation. You can also apply hot compresses to bring down the swelling.
