While ingrown toenails are extremely painful, it is hardly necessary for you to take a trip to the hospital for one. The problem is quite severe, and there are very few remedies which will actually work on them, but if you persist and make some small changes on a permanent basis, there is no reason why you should have to visit a hospital in the first place. The first thing you must do is stop wearing closed shoes, as this only serves to compound the problem.

Closed shoes, no matter how loose and comfortable they are, will always press the ingrown nail further into your skin and worsen matters. Ti is always wise to keep ingrown toenails at a minimum length. This will always be the best way to getting rid of the problem.

But since it is extremely painful to clip nails when they are in this condition, you can try to ease it by soaking your feet in warm water for about 20 minutes before clipping. If you add a bit of camphor crystals to the water, this will numb your feet and make it easier to clip the nail.

Remember to not use a pair of scissors as this will make the problem worse rather than remedy it. For the future, keep your nails trimmed and cut properly to avoid facing this problem again. It is also important to remember that you should not cut your nails so that the tops form a "V" or a "U" shape. This will give your nails points at the edges which will dig into your skin, and the ingrowth will come right back when the nail grown next. Simple cut them flat across the top, giving a slightly boxy shape instead. If you trim your nails every week, you will find that the problem will be in hand quite quickly.
